Kerala cracks down on use of plastic
In a major step to curb pollution, the Kerala government on Saturday decided to enforce the ban on plastic articles of below 50 microns, including carry bags, disposable cups and pet bottles.
Local bodies were instructed to strictly enforce the ban by cancelling the licences of shops selling or using plastic bags and to impose fines on those dealing in such articles. A government order in this regard included a provision to impose an initial fine of Rs 5,000, an official release said.
The government and civic bodies will encourage firms making paper and cotton bags to replace plastic. At least two such units will be set up in each village panchayat.
The use of plastic will be strictly banned in hospitals and plastic cups will be avoided at government functions. An awareness campaign will be launched to promote the use of glass and steel tumblers and plates during marriage feasts, the release said.
The restriction will also cover political parties and social groups, who will not be allowed to use plastic flags, banners or flex boards.
